People’s Budget Office – Garden @ LOVE Park

In April 2023, Root Catalyst designed and installed a container garden, made entirely out of upcycled filing cabinets, as apart of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program’s People’s Budget Office installation.

The People’s Budget Office is a public and interactive art installation at LOVE Park, made out of a retrofitted shipping container, where residents can learn about the budget from city officials, everyday Philadelphians, and grassroots groups. The project’s aim is to “increase public awareness through popular education on the city’s budget process and offer a platform for residents to share what the city should fund”.

Root Catalyst was brought in as an artist/partner to design and install a container garden made of filing recycled cabinets, while integrating various artistic and informational elements that raise public awareness about Philadelphia’s wider urban agriculture community and ongoing advocacy efforts related to food and land sovereignty. Some of the the projects/efforts highlighted in this installation include: The Resistance Garden Project, Philadelphia’s first ever Urban Agriculture Plan, and ongoing advocacy efforts to preserve local farms and gardens.
