School Gardening & Sustainability

Root Catalyst LLC engages school-communities in the design, installation, and cultivation of school gardens, and using these dynamic living-learning environments to offer students opportunities to enhance academic learning and nurture a new generation of environmental stewards.

Our team has successfully started 10 school gardens, engaging over 400 students in meaningful hands-on learning experiences along the way.

Our core services include:

School-Community Design Facilitation – Engaging intergenerational school-communities in the design of dynamic living-learning environments
School Garden Installation – Installing customized gardens in schoolyards, playgrounds, classrooms, and rooftops
Educational Integration – Working with faculty to explore meaningful ways to integrate gardens into school curricula to enhance academic learning and foster deeper connections between students and their food, bodies, and local ecosystems. Facilitating interdisciplinary workshops focused on urban agriculture, food justice, environmental stewardship, and social entrepreneurship.
Seasonal Garden Support – Supporting seasonal transitions and the long-term sustainability of school gardens

We understand that every school is different, and therefore customize our approach to meet the unique needs and goals of our school partners. We adapt our designs and installations to meet the specific spatial limitations of each school, and work with faculty to explore ways to meaningfully integrate school gardening into academic curricula.
